Surreality (Part 14)

The surreal peace between the soldiers and Minaroro, their mortal enemy, lasted until the child was stabilized and carted off on a stretcher, then, as if a pistol had fired to start a race, the soldiers leapt back into their previous hostilities with Minaroro. Minaroro was simultaneously hit by a barrage of bullets from every direction, allowing herself to fall Minaroro drew her knife and readied herself to strike when the soldiers had to reload, knowing that none of them had anything that could puncture her armor at the moment. The telltale wheeze of the soldier’s guns announced that they were empty; Minaroro sprung from her crouched position grabbing the closest soldier to her, her knife stopped a hairs breath away from the soldiers’ eye, over the petrified young soldier’s shoulder Minaroro saw a small group of children watching in horror. The image of each of those children clutching their own bloody chests flashed across Minaroro’s imagination, horrified Minaroro took a step back away from the soldier and dropped her knife, had anyone been able to seen Minaroro’s face through her body armor they would have seen a confused and horrified young woman, not a soldier.
A Draconian warrior was expected to be able to kill anyone or anything without any hesitation or remorse, but Minaroro liked children and had never had to kill a child let alone injure one, she hadn’t even managed to hurt the dummies meant to represent children in her early training.
Minaroro’s internal battle to come to terms with what she had done, caused her to over look the soldier approaching, with a weapon that was basically a backpack sized tazer capable of delivering over a million volts of electricity. The electricity ripped through Minaroro’s battle armor shutting down systems as it went till it jumped into her body, Minaroro dropped to ground without a sound, as Minaroro’s consciousness started to leave her, she thought she had seen a young boy who looked just like Tamas then the blackness overcame her.

Surreality (Part 13)

“Heat signatures ahead, heat means people, people mean medics, medics mean the child may live” Minaroro told herself as she ran toward the large grouping of heat signatures ahead of her through the door at the end of the hallway, her mission objective completely forgotten. Minaroro burst through the door at full speed then stopped dead, the room was huge, the palace Minaroro grew up in could have fit in this room at least twenty times over and it was full of people. Minaroro found out later that this was the base commanders wedding, and everyone who was not on guard duty was there. Minaroro stood in awe of the splendor before her, the likes of which she had never seen, then she realized that every eye in the room was on her as was every gun, “This child need medical assistance, is there a doctor here?” Minaroro announced loudly. No one moved, a pin drop would have sounded a kin to a thunderous wave, “Please help her, she is losing blood rapidly” Minaroro repeated louder. An elderly man stood up from his seat and quickly walked toward Minaroro and the child, just before the man reached them another man told him to halt “Don’t get any closer Doc, Draconian soldiers don’t even blink when they kill children, it has to be a trap.” Minaroro moved forward the last few steps between her and the doctor and handed him the child ignoring the sound of the guns clicking into their active settings.
The doctor set to work on the child immediately calling for a med-kit, while Minaroro stood over the doctor unsure of what else to do but wanting to see what the doctor was doing, “Get out of my light! I can’t see the wound” the doctor told Minaroro sharply, Minaroro quickly took a step back “Sorry” Minaroro said quietly.
The soldiers around Minaroro were unsure of how to react to this, the only time they had ever seen a Draconian was when they were in battle with one, and an apologetic one was unheard of, Minaroro was unaware of the soldier’s confusion because her eyes never left the child.

Surreality (Part 12)

Two of their shots hit her in the chest throwing her backward, Minaroro rode the impacts against her armor and used them to rotate into a complete back flip; before she landed she had already drawn her sidearm, fired twice, and holstered her weapon. As soon as Minaroro’s foot hit the ground she was moving forward again, passed the two guards who now had gaping holes between their eyes. Minaroro took a right at the fork in the hallway when she saw the twenty-seven and a half heat signatures in the room that direction below the balcony. Minaroro blindly rushed through the door and vaulted over the railing to the unsuspecting group below.
Minaroro made short work of twenty-six of the soldiers and had her knife in the twenty-seventh soldier when she noticed that the half heat signature was directly behind her, removing the knife from the stomach of the soldier in front of her Minaroro rotated the knife mid-swing and, without turning around, plunged it into the half heat signature behind her. Minaroro removed the knife and sheathed it without turning around and was about to continue through the door in front of her, when a sound made her pause and turn. The half heat signature she had stabbed at blindly was a four year old alien child, who had wanted Minaroro to pick her up. Minaroro caught the child before she hit the ground. Minaroro was in a panic, they had only taught her how to kill not how to heal, what should she do?
Minaroro sprinted through the doorway carrying the child, “this doesn’t make any sense”, Minaroro thought as she ran “this is a military outpost. Why are there children here and where are the soldiers when you need them?” Minaroro could not find any heat signatures on her display screen, then the memory suddenly hit Minaroro and caused her to come to a complete stop; “In the Antilus system there is a planet that is a secret haven from your people.” The memory of Tamas made Minaroro forget where she was momentarily, but the child’s cries of pain brought her back to the present. “What have I done” Minaroro asked herself while looking at the child, then a heat signature registered on her display and she sprinted in that direction.

Surreality (Part 11)

CHAPTER 3

Five years later (back to the present)
As Minaroro sat in the back of an assault slip-ship, on the way to what would be her 500th mission, she went over her briefing once more; Infiltrate the Antilus system and wipe out the military outpost there. Something bothered Minaroro about this mission, something tugged at her memory but she couldn’t quite remember what it was, but told her she should not be on this mission, not because of the danger but something else entirely. Minaroro filed her concerns in the back of her mind and focused on checking her gear for the upcoming mission.
A bit later Minaroro was informed that they had reached orbit and that her orbital insertion would take place in five minutes. Minaroro dropped onto the night side of the fifth planet of the Antilus system, the only remotely habitable planet in the system, while the slip-ship that dropped her, jumped back out of the system, getting a ride home was her problem. After Minaroro cleared the upper atmosphere she activated her built in anti-grav units, slowing her descent and guiding her towards the military base that was barely visible through the jungle terrain.
The two men guarding the entrance to the base never saw Minaroro when she dropped between them and their bodies did not make a sound when they landed on the ground without their heads, Minaroro was inside the outer doors before their bodies or heads hit the ground. The fifteen guards hanging out in the room just inside the outer doors faired slightly better then the other two being that they actually got to see her before their deaths, once again Minaroro was through the next set of doors before the first body hit the ground.
According to Minaroro’s heat sensor she had cleared all but two of the soldiers from the entry area, Minaroro headed in their direction. When Minaroro rounded the final corner to the last two guards she realized she had messed up somewhere, somehow they knew that she would be there and opened fire as soon as she had made it three steps into the hallway.

Surreality (Part 10)

Sneaking on to the cargo ship seemed easier then it should have been this was due to the fact that the guard was flirting with one of the ships disembarking passengers. Mansaroro and Tamas quickly found a suitable group of crates for Tamas to hide in then said their final tear filled goodbyes, “Remember Roro, the Antilus system, meet me there someday” Tamas reminded Mansaroro as he hugged her. “I won’t forget” Mansaroro sobbed as she hugged Tamas. They quickly ended their hug and Tamas hide inside the crates.
Mansaroro made it halfway across the cargo bay when she heard a familiar voice, a voice that filled her with dread, “Well if it isn’t the worthless runt” Mansaroro’s older sister strode into the cargo bay with her usual arrogant swagger “trying to help your little pet escape or something runt?” her sister said in a half joking manner. Mansaroro’s eyes widened slightly in surprise “so, I WAS right, where is that pathetic pet, runt?” Mansaroro’s sister asked as she eyed Mansaroro with a hungry and eager look. Once again Mansaroro’s eyes betrayed her when they unconsciously darted toward the crate where Tamas was hidden, Mansaroro’s sister smirked then drew her sidearm in one fluid motion, a weapon most races would consider to be a heavy weapon that one would mount on a vehicle, and fired it one handed directly at the crate Tamas had hidden in. Mansaroro tried to dodge in front of the crates when she saw her sister go for her weapon, but she was far to slow to beat her sisters perfectly executed draw. Mansaroro watched the shot arch toward the crate as if it was flying in slow motion. Mansaroro heard someone screaming, later she realized she was that person. The explosion rocked the ship, Mansaroro sunk to her knees as she stared at the fiery crater where her best friend use to be, oblivious of her sisters laughing and the crews frantic attempts to put out the fire.
After that day Mansaroro went through the rest of her training and daily life completely devoid of emotions or fear of death. When Mansaroro reached the age of sixteen she was forced to receive her second marks. Mansaroro achieved something no other member of her race had been able to match; she got her second marks without injury, this was due to her complete lack of self preservation, which surprised her examiners. In addition to receiving her second marks Mansaroro also received her adult name: Minaroro, and her first mission as a new soldier of the Draconian empire. With this assignment Mansaroro’s childhood ended and she would forever be Minaroro and a warrior for her race, or so she believed.

How to make Ramen!

The story will continue in the next post, because this post is being hijacked to write how to make ramen. Here is the recipe I will be making Friday:

STEP 1: Boil water in a large pot. Add chicken bones, garlic, ginger, green onions, carrots, onions, kombu seaweed, and other ingredients to taste. Simmer for more then 4 hours on low heat, to make stock.

STEP 2: Simmer a block of pork in soy sauce, sake and monosodium glutamate (or salt). The liquid becomes a gravy to which the stock is added to make soup. Put this gravy in large soup bowls with chopped green onions.

STEP 3: Bring water to a boil in another pot. Cook noodles in the boiling water for about 1 minute, with the top on the pot. (The noodles will cook quickly if the pot is covered while boiling at a high heat.

STEP 4: While the noodles are boiling, add some of the stock to the gravy in the soup bowls and blend well.

STEP 5: When the noodles are cooked, take them out with a strainer, shake them to remove all excess water, then add them to the soup in the bowls.

STEP 6: Garnish with thin slices of the simmered pork (or whatever meat really), bamboo-shoot pickles, boiled and strained komatsuna, and some hard-boiled egg.

Enjoy^^

I'll update part 10 soon.

Surreality (part 9)

The following day, after fifty or so discarded ideas Mansaroro had an epiphany, “The space port!” Mansaroro said suddenly startling Tamas and making him drop the pillow he was handing to Mansaroro. “Care to elaborate?” Tamas asked, as Mansaroro looked at Tamas with an excited and expectant face. “we’ll sneak you onto a cargo ship an when you get to regular shipping lanes you can eject with an escape pod before they jump again.” Tamas smiled and nodded, “yes, that will probably work better then our “raise a carnivorous plant army and overthrow the Draconian government” plan, but you do realize we will most likely never see each other again.” Mansaroro nodded sadly “at least you will be alive” Mansaroro said, breaking into tears once again. “We will meet again someday Roro, I promise. In the Antilus system there is a planet that is a secret haven from your people, when your old enough to get your own ship meet me there okay?” Tamas said while hugging Mansaroro. Mansaroro nodded with tears still streaming down her face, “Well now that that’s settled how exactly will we be sneaking into the most secure facility on the planet?” Tamas asked, grinning in his usual manner.
Tamas and Mansaroro puzzled over this problem for the next several hours till Mansaroro realized that she was in fact a princess and could gain access very easily. Tamas bowed very deeply to Mansaroro “Shall we go dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?”. Mansaroro stared at Tamas blankly, “shall we go to the space port?” Tamas rephrased after a moment. “You are so weird Tamas.” Mansaroro said as they left the palace for the space port.
Getting into the space port was no problem, Mansaroro simply informed the guards at the door that she had never seen a spaceship and wanted to see one, no one questioned Tamas’s presence as it was common knowledge that the princess never went anywhere without her pet. The number one problem was that neither of them had any idea what a cargo ship looked like, and if they did find one, how would they know where it was going. After wandering around for a few hours they saw a sign announcing the departure of a cargo ship headed toward the Arik’ed front lines.

Surreality (part 8)

Tamas and Mansaroro became fast friends and were inseparable, when Mansaroro turned six years old her free time was drastically shortened because of the martial arts and weapons training she had to go through as part of her education, this resulted in Mansaroro being able to see Tamas only after her training. Despite this Mansaroro still spent all her free time with her only friend and would teach Tamas and practice everything she learned from her training, an action, unknown to them, if discovered would lead to both of their deaths.
The time seem to pass quickly for Mansaroro, for the first time she knew happiness because of Tamas, even though she did not much like the training she was forced to endure, she would pay complete attention to her training and try her very best but only because she did not want to make a mistake when she showed Tamas that days lesson.
On the walk back to Mansaroro’s house one evening just after Mansaroro’s thirteenth birthday they happened upon a conversion between Mansaroro’s parents that would destroy Mansaroro’s idyllic happiness. “She has grown too attached to her pet, she must not show compassion to such lowly creatures, we will have to kill it long before her second marks or that creature may adversely affect her training to such an extent that she will not survive her initiation.” Mansaroro’s mother voiced her concerns to her husband unaware that the subject of the discussion was hiding less then a foot behind her in a large carnivorous plant that the children had befriended when they were ten. “very well dear, I will have the pet put down three days from now” Mansaroro’s father said, in the manner someone would discuss the weather.
Tamas spent twenty minutes calming Mansaroro down after her parents had left, “I won’t let them kill you Tamas” Mansaroro declared with tears streaming down her face. “I appreciate that Roro, but how exactly are you going to stop the king and queen of the Draconian empire from killing one pet?” Tamas asked with a slight teasing tone and a large grin. Mansaroro looked utterly crestfallen and started to sob again, the sadness from the possibility of losing her only friend was too much for her. “Relax Roro we have three days to think of something.” Tamas said consoling Mansaroro.

Surreality (part 7)

Meanwhile, the girl cautiously peeked around the corner, in time to collide with the quickly moving alien boy. “Wow, you’re head is hard” the alien boy said while lying on the ground and rubbing his forehead. “Sorry if I scared you back there. My name is Tamas, what’s yours?” the boy asked while helping the girl back to her feet. “My name is Mansaroro” the young girl said nervously while looking at the floor. “Mansaroro, pretty name, I shall call you Roro”, Tamas declared after some thought. “So can I call you As-“, Mansaroro’s query was cut off by her older sisters arrival. “So the worthless runt survived her first marks, I’ll bet mother and father went easy on you because you’re so pathetic. Ha, they gave you an even more worthless pet as well” Mansaroro’s sister laughed as she lifted Tamas up with one hand and threw him against the wall. “Tamas, Are you okay?” Mansaroro cried out as she ran to her injured new friend. “Enjoy your worthless pet runt” Mansaroro’s sister said over her shoulder as she walked off laughing.
“Are you injured?” Mansaroro asked with great concern. Tamas’s stomach answered before Tamas could and Mansaroro’s stomach rumbled in agreement, “I think food will cure me of my aliment, Roro”, Tamas said with a grin.
Mansaroro helped Tamas up and they ventured back to the dining area, they had left not to long ago, in search of food. There were two steaming plates of food on the table when they arrived, and judging from the stack of dirty plates, everyone else had already eaten and left for other tasks. “Well, shall we eat?” Tamas asked as he bowed dramatically to Mansaroro. Mansaroro giggled then raced Tamas to the table.

Surreality (part 6)

And so starts Chapter 2
a more serious chapter, sadly the seriousness will continue till the begining of chapter 4 but fear not I'm sure my humor will sneak through.

Fifteen years ago, on the other side of the galaxy, on a small pink planet roughly the size of earth:

A small child awakens with a start, flashes of the hellish torture running through her head, a torture every child on her planet must go through in order to be allowed to live to be six. Today was the day the parents of those children would give them gifts in order to help them forget the torture they themselves had inflicted on their offspring. The child readied herself for the day in the manor of a depressed robot, then crept down to the dining area, dreading the upcoming meal for fear her parents would repeat the painful education she experienced the night before. What the girl found when she entered the dining area was her parents standing on either side of a small alien boy with proud smiles on their faces. “We are proud of you, child. You have proven yourself worthy to live; here is our gift to you to show our pride”. The girl’s mother beamed as she pushed the alien boy towards the girl. Unsure of how to react to the boy that was being propelled at her, the child reacted in the best way she could think of, she turned and fled back up the stairs. The boy turned to face the girl’s parents in confusion. “Well boy what are you waiting for?” the father said with a sparkle of amusement in his normally cold eyes, “go after her”. The boy back pedaled a few steps farther away from the girls parents then ran up the stairs after the girl.
“Are you sure giving her an alien as a pet is a good idea Tahir? She may become attached to it”, the girl’s mother asked, as they watched the alien boy give chase to their youngest daughter. “Quetzalxochitl my dear, she must become accustomed to the appearance of alien creatures so as not to show any reaction to them when she reaches the age of service”, the father said while gazing down at his wife. “Besides, the pet will only be allowed to live till she reaches her second marks”.

Surreality (Part 5)

I found out later that those little purple aliens saw in a different spectrum of light then any other race and their ships are actually very brightly colored from their perspective, they often complained that no other race had ever once complimented their beautiful interior decorating.
During my exploration of my new ship I discovered a few disturbing facts that would cause some difficulties with my general comfort and survival, the first being that there was not a single drop of water on board, full line of dehydrated food, but no water. Not only that, but the shower seemed to extrude some sort of pink goo, assuming that it was in fact a shower and not a toaster or something. To complete the trifecta of rotten happenstance the user manual for the ship, that the alien had hit me with, was written entirely in Chinese. Based on this information I decided to push all the buttons on the bridge until I figured out how to work the ship, then I would venture to the nearest planet or whatever to get water. This desire for water was greatly intensified by eating the Habanera peppers; I had thought to be raisins, on the way to the bridge.
Once I had reached the bridge I made a discovery that aided, greatly in easing my anxiety about my continued survival, the little aliens had installed a helpful AI who spoke excellent English. The AI also seemed to be accidentally sarcastic. My suspicions in regard to this was confirmed when I discovered the concept of sarcasm was not present in the AI’s databanks.
I spent the next several days being instructed on how to pilot my new ship and in the general use of the facilities onboard. Turns out that the pink goo thing was in fact the shower, not quite as invigorating as a normal shower but it did give me a pleasant cherry blossom smell and seemed to brush my hair for me.
A few days after the AI had finished instructing me, it informed me that a freighter we had happened upon wanted to know if we would like to trade with them. Upon learning that I had been given a bank account, with what was apparently galactic currency, I asked to AI to negotiate a trade for some water and directions to the nearest place to buy more. Two hours later we parted ways with the kind freighter, two weeks worth of water heavier and with directions to go left, then straight passed two lights, and a space station would be on our right, “can’t miss it” the trader had told us. Not quite the type of directions I had been expecting but the AI seemed happy with them so I guess they were good. So for the first time in my life I was actually excited about what might happen tomorrow, though I do hope my head will be spared from further “excitement”.

END OF CHAPTER 1

Surreality is just a working title. anyone got any better names? I'm open to suggestions ^_^
